what clutch should I get - The Volvo Performance Community

I put a new stock sachs clutch in front of my m46. You run the m47 right? The m47 is even weaker than the m46.

I have only been running the m46 for a few weeks and my syncros are already going. Drag racing didnt help....

I bought the stock clutch as a "fuse" for my tranny. I can already get the clutch to slip too. After doing burnouts to try to get better traction I was getting horrible clutch slip.

My point is stick with the stock clutch if you want your tranny to last. The turbo clutch is a different size than the non turbo. If you want the turbo clutch you will neeed the bigger 9 inch flywheel too. BTW 200 and 700 turbos use the same clutch. FCP groton doesnt have 700 series clutches listed, but the 240 intercooled use the same clutch.

Ditch the m47. Skip the m46 and get a m90. You just have to spend a few K to import it. Jesus no kiddin.
Damn M47. I mean I love it and all, but...

That answered a Q too, about what clutch to use. Was thinking 740 turbo clutch b/c they used a B230FT which is what I'll have essentially once I get the turbo in.
M90 price SUCKS though. I mean damn. Otherwise yeah I would get one. I might still end up doing it.

Otherwise I'll try a Getrag/T5. Summer project.

What HP are you runnin guidom?
Turbo or N/A clutch? Which will be the better "fuse" until I can get a better tranny? Never heard of a different size flywheel, but if you say so.

Either way this whole situation blows. Here I am finally upgrading my car and BAM I've got issues of whether or not I'll be able to run even 175hp.

_z I recommend getting the Brute Power clutch from Borg Warner Parts. It's spec'd out for 40% more holding force. Mine was about the same price as buying the stock replacement 740 turbo clutch. I bought the version for the 740 turbo application. Any local shop that gets BWP can get this clutch for you. Mine cost $335. Sorry I'm at work otherwise I'd give you the part number. My local ABC auto ordered it for me. This will fit your car without any modifications. It's a really nice kit, complete with throwout bearing, pilot bearing and clutch alignment tool.

Happy rolling, Hey there,
Brute Power clutch kit part number . For the 740 turbo. Fits the recessed flywheel. All you need to fit it to the older cars that have a recessed flywheel installed is the older style throwout bearing. 86-newer uses the throwout bearing that comes with the clutch kit. You can also fit the newer throwout bearing arm to the 85 and older trans and use the complete kit.

By the way, upon opening the box it is a LUK clutch made in Germany to their Brute Power specs. They are an OEM clutch supplier.

Happy rolling,

Was looking for info about clutches and found this on Eaton site:

Eaton and Volvo engineers teamed together to create catapult release fork and hydraulic release system that works exceptionally well with a Solo Advantage clutch.

If you replace the self-adjusting clutch with a mechanically adjusted clutch, you're potentially setting yourself up for failure.

When a manual adjusted clutch is used with a hydraulic release system, the driver cannot detect the need for clutch adjustment due to incorrect release bearing position. This can result in damage to the clutch and the

hydraulic release system components. Plus, not properly maintaining clutch adjustment can affect the performance and life of the clutch.

That's why you should only use the Solo Advantage Self-adjusting clutch as a replacement.

So that would be the best option for my or just manufacturer bla bla self-ad ???

Thanks!

95% of our fleet uses the solo clutch. They are nice. No need for periodic adjustment. As for what they said, I do know that on the eaton trans/volvo setup with the slave cylinder mounted to the bottom of the clutch cover it is almost impossible to adjust the old style clutch with the 5/8" hex. Everything is in the way and it is a two person job. That is just another reason we went with solo clutches.
Its just an ad our whole fleet uses manual adjust clutches and there is nothing better in my opinion you can tell when u need to adjust on volvo because the pedal is going to touch the floor and the clutch pedal release will be to far up eaton we only use eaton clutches theyre the best but as far as a solo disc its bs there is no difference we prefer the manual adjust because a lot of the self adjust clutchs the trucls came with the adjustment was getting stuck and not adjust properly and there was nothing we could do about it besides replace the clutch with a manual adjust its never going to get stuck u just have to be able to know youre truck and figure out when it needs to be asjusted
I am a firm believer in manual adjusting clutches. However there are certain chassis that are better to use solo. The vn models area have the hyd fork mounted under the bell housing and beside is a little inspection hole. This hole is to small to make manual adjusting the clutch very difficult. In this case a solo is ideal if it works. I still do not have a strong trust with solo. The newer Volvos have moved the fork assy over more and have gone back to the normal size inspection hole. In this model I would install a manual adjusting clutch.
