How do oil-free compressors work? - Industrial Air Systems NZ

Are you looking for a reliable air compressor? Do you need an oil-free compressor?

You can find more information on our web, so please take a look.

In this article, we explain what oil-free compressors are, how they work, and how they differ from traditional oil compressors.

What is an oil-free air compressor?

An oil-free air compressor does not use oil to lubricate the different parts inside the air compressor, meaning it can produce high-quality and oil-free air. Oil-free compressors are popular across various industries due to their high efficiency, affordability, and superior air quality.

How do oil-free air compressors work?

Oil-free compressors are designed to function without any lubrication, depending on the internal mechanism and the friction between the working parts.

For example, a scroll compressor has two interleaving scrolls &#; one that moves and one that is stationary. As the orbiting scroll moves and the spiral gets smaller, the air gets trapped in the inlet. This increases the pressure, resulting in a very efficient compressed air system. As the two scrolls do not touch, they do not need any oil or lubrication.

Oil vs oil-free air compressor

Oil-lubricated air compressors and oil-free air compressors offer different benefits, which can make a significant difference to your workshop or factory.

An oil-lubricated air compressor uses oil to lubricate the compressor, seal the air, and keep it cool. Oiled air compressors need more frequent maintenance and oil changes, generally leading to higher lifetime costs. However, they also produce less noise and heat.

An oil-free air compressor does not use any oil, instead using an inter-cooler to keep heat down. This achieves a much higher level of air purity, with little to no risk of contamination in the air supply. This is particularly critical for applications involving purity requirements, such as the following:

  • Food and beverage
  • Pharmaceutical and medical
  • Natural gas and energy extraction
  • Plastics
  • Woodworking
  • Plumbing
  • Electronics
  • Textiles
  • Painting

Best oil-free air compressor NZ

Here at Industrial Air Systems, We stock two different series of oil-free compressors.

We supply PneuTech's RSCRD-V series of oil-free, variable-speed, rotary screw air compressors. These are renowned for their safety, durability, and unparalleled performance owing to their superior design and cutting-edge technology.

Producing the cleanest and highest purity level of air, the RSCRD-V series of compressors guarantees food safety. There&#;s no need for air/oil separator changes or oil contamination testing because the RSCRD-V eliminates all traces of oil contamination at the source, achieving 100% oil-free Class-0 Certification.

We also have the RSCRXA range of scroll compressors. This range offers oil-free compressed air that is produced to class .1. There is little maintenance required which means that this is a reliable and cost-effective choice for the medical & food & beverage industries.

The inclusion of the world-renowned Anest Iwata scroll airend elevates the RSCRXA series to the forefront of high-performance scroll compressors worldwide. Engineered with meticulous design and efficient ventilation, this compressor ensures trouble-free operation. Boasting a silicone-free construction, it eliminates the necessity for inline filtration to purge hydrocarbons. Moreover, the compressed air remains pristine, devoid of metal contaminants, thanks to the absence of frictional components within the air chamber.

Higher efficiency

Scroll compressors have fewer moving parts, less torque variation, and the ability to switch off when not in use. This makes them highly efficient and far smoother to operate, meaning they require far less frequent maintenance.

You will get efficient and thoughtful service from Comair.

Compact and easy to move

Scroll compressors are small and easy to move around as needed. They are also stored in a discreet protective shell.

Low noise level

Our scroll compressors have fewer moving parts and a larger compression chamber, making them far quieter to operate. This means workers don&#;t need to wear ear protection and can even continue normal conversations without interruption.

Easy to maintain

Scroll compressors are simple, reliable, and low maintenance, with fewer moving parts, no oil changes, and lower revolutions (RPM). This reduces regular servicing and extends the lifespan of your compressor.

Certified oil-free air

Our scroll compressors produce 100% pure oil-free air without inline filters. With this model, you can confidently manufacture your products with no risk of contamination.

Oil-Free Scroll Technology 101

The scroll concept is actually quite old. The initial patents date back to the early s. Unfortunately, the technology to fabricate scrolls accurately did not exist, and the concept was forgotten.

In the scroll concept was re-invented by a physicist named Niels Young. Mr. Young brought the idea to Arthur D. Little, LLC of Cambridge, MA. Arthur D. Little saw its potential and began the development of a feasibility model in January .

With pressure to significantly improve refrigeration compressor efficiency, the potential and advantages of a scroll compressor were recognized by the refrigeration industry in the mid-s. A scroll compressor offered improved efficiency, with the added benefit of greater reliability, smoother operation, and lower noise. Arthur D. Little began the development of a scroll-type compressor for refrigeration for the Trane Co. in late .

Today, scroll compressors are used extensively for refrigeration by many well-known companies, including Trane, Hitachi, and Copeland.
