A lot of these places will put together a custom set for you. I made the mistake my first time of getting too many large size bolts that I will never use.
In Michigan we have a fantastic supplier called Alma Bolt:Google "Dayton Ohio Fastener Companies", then investigate which ones have the best quality and value:A lot of these places will put together a custom set for you. There is some good basic advice in here. Same for fine thread. If a guy is exclusive to cars then he needs more metrics but so many bolts on cars are reused. I have a tray for metrics I keep extra stuff I run across and use sae where I can for additional work. When I employed more men used to stock exclusive 5, now I have a lot of 2. I buy bulk from the farm store in sizes I really use a lot of, 1/4 20, short stuff so its not a gut wrenching decision to replace stuff and get the right length. I keep a fair amount of soft (2) just for this reason. Its one thing to clean and reuse an expensive large bolt but the tiny stuff is too time consuming and aggravating.Fine as well, I keep a tray for a few pieces for repairs but don't stock quantity of every size. I have a machine where the mfg used a bunch of it on common shields etc, finally tossed it and use something more practical and not so exclusive, not highly engineered though.Grade 8 as well, I have a handful, can count on one hand the times I needed it in the last 2 decades. 1 memorable where having the right length and size stocked for it would have been extremely prohibitive. In a bulldozer transmission and frame all fugged up from someone putting the wrong bolts in during a repair, we used most of the old and needed 3 or 4 new. Most asking here about a set wouldn't likely have a use for something like that in 3/4 and 7/8.I will also agree there are some fastener places willing to help. I have never had an issue though with the stuff off the shelf. Replacement and extra was important to me to the point I carried it on my service truck. Stuff I used carried a box,, 3/8 and 1/2 nuts etc.
