Can change the direction of propagation of light, and can change the relative spectral distribution of ultraviolet, visible, or infrared light glass. Optical glass in a narrow sense refers to colorless optical glass; optical glass in a broad sense also includes tinted optical glass, laser glass, quartz optical glass, radiation-resistant glass, ultraviolet-infrared optical glass, fiber optical glass, acousto-optic glass, magneto-optic glass, and photochromic glass. Optical glass can be used to manufacture lenses, prisms, mirrors, and windows in optical instruments. Components made of optical glass are key elements in optical instruments.

Optical glass is the foundation and important part of the optoelectronic technology industry. Especially after the 1990s, with the continuous integration of optics and electronic information science, new material science, as the basic material of optoelectronics, the application of optical glass in the three major fields of optical transmission, optical storage, and optoelectronic display has been advancing by leaps and bounds, and it has become one of the basic conditions for the development of social informatization, especially the development of optoelectronic information technology.

Glass materials are used in the manufacture of lenses, prisms, mirrors, windows, etc. for optical instruments or mechanical systems. Including colorless optical glass (usually referred to as optical glass), tinted optical glass, radiation-resistant optical glass, radiation-resistant glass, and optical quartz glass. Optical glass has a high degree of transparency, a high degree of homogeneity in chemistry and physics (structure and properties), and specific optical constants. It can be categorized into a series of silicates, borates, phosphates, fluorides, and sulfur compounds. The varieties are numerous and are classified primarily by their position in the refractive index (nD)-Abbé value (VD) diagram. Traditionally, all types of glass with nD>1.60 and VD>50 and nD<1.60 and VD>55 are designated as corona (K) glass, and the remaining types are designated as flint (F) glass. Coronation glass is generally used as a convex lens and flint glass as a concave lens. Usually, corona glass belongs to the alkali borosilicate system, light corona glass belongs to the aluminum silicate system, heavy corona glass and barium flint glass belong to the alkali borosilicate system, and the vast majority of flint glass belongs to the lead-potassium silicate system. With the broadening of the application field of optical glass, its varieties are constantly expanding, and its composition includes almost all the elements in the periodic table.

An inorganic glassy material that transmits light by refraction, reflection, or transmission or changes the intensity or spectral distribution of light by absorption. It has stable optical properties and high optical homogeneity.

Optical Glass Classification

-Colorless Optical Glass

It has specific requirements for optical constants and is characterized by high transmission in the visible region and no selective absorption coloring. According to the size of the Abbe number is divided into coronal and flint glass, all kinds of refractive index are divided into several species, and according to the size of the refractive index in order. Mostly used as telescopes, microscopes, cameras and other lenses, prisms, mirrors, and so on.

-Irradiated Optical Glass

High-energy irradiation has a greater absorption capacity, there are high-lead glass and CaO-B2O2 system glass, the former can prevent γ-rays and X-ray irradiation, and the latter can absorb slow neutrons and thermal neutrons, mainly used in the nuclear industry, and the medical field, etc., as a shielding and peeping window materials.

-Irradiation Resistant Optical Glass

In a certain γ-ray, X-ray irradiation, the visible area of the transmittance rate changes less, varieties and grades with the same colorless optical glass, used in the manufacture of high-energy irradiation of optical instruments and peep windows.

-Colored Optical Glass

Also known as filter glass. It has selective absorption and transmittance properties for specific wavelengths in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared regions, and is divided into three categories of selective absorption, cut-off type, and neutral gray according to spectral characteristics; and is divided into three categories of ionic coloring, metal colloidal coloring, and sulfur selenide coloring according to coloring mechanism, and is mainly used in the manufacture of light filters.

-UV and IR optical glass

With specific optical constants and high transmittance in the ultraviolet or infrared wavelength bands, they are used as ultraviolet and infrared optical instruments or as window materials.

-Optical quartz glass

Silicon dioxide is the main component, with high-temperature resistance, low coefficient of expansion, high mechanical strength, good chemical properties, etc., used in the manufacture of various wavelengths through the special requirements of prisms, lenses, windows, and mirrors. In addition, they are also used in large-scale integrated circuit manufacturing photomask boards, liquid crystal display panels, image CD-ROM disc-based sheet glass; light along the direction of the magnetic lines of force through the glass when the polarization surface of the rotation of the magneto-optical glass; light according to a certain direction of transmission of ultrasound through the glass, the occurrence of diffraction, reflection, convergence, or frequency shift of the acoustic glass and so on.
